Греция 2026: Как работают системы EES и ETIAS

EES ETIAS Greece 600x400

As we step into 2026, the landscape of travel to Europe, and specifically to Greece, has fundamentally changed with the full implementation of EES and ETIAS.

For those planning a getaway to the sun-drenched shores of the Peloponnese or the rugged cliffs of Crete, understanding these new digital border protocols is essential for anyone visiting the Schengen Area this year. Greece, along with its European partners, has officially moved into a new era of border management designed to enhance security and modernize the entry process.

For travelers, this means fewer passport stamps, more digital checks, and a one-time biometric registration that simplifies future crossings. While the systems may sound technical, the experience on arrival is intended to be straightforward and seamless.

The Entry/Exit System (EES): For Non-EU Nationals

The Entry/Exit System (EES) is a new automated IT system for registering and monitoring Third-Country Nationals (non-EU/non-Schengen citizens). This high-tech digital record has officially replaced traditional manual passport stamps for all short-stay travelers.

Who does it apply to?

EES applies to all travelers who are not citizens of an EU country, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, or Switzerland. Whether you are a visa-required traveler (e.g., from Russia or Turkey) or enjoy visa-free access (e.g., from the US or UK), you will be registered in the system upon entry.

It is important to note that Non-EU nationals who hold a valid residence permit in an EU country continue to travel throughout Europe with the same ease as an EU citizen and do not need to provide biometrics at the airport.

What to expect at the border:

Upon your first arrival at a Greek airport, port, or land border, you will be required to complete a one-time registration.

EES 3 steps
  • Biometric data: Travelers must provide a facial image and four fingerprints.
  • First-time registration: Please be prepared for potentially longer wait times during your initial entry, as the biometric capture process can be more time-consuming than a standard check.
  • Subsequent trips: Once your data is stored (valid for 3 years), future crossings will be significantly faster through automated self-service kiosks.
  • For Visa Holders: If you are traveling with a Schengen visa, you will still need to register in the EES. The system tracks your duration of stay to ensure compliance with the «90/180 days» rule automatically.

ETIAS: Only for Visa-Exempt Travelers

While EES is for all non-EU travelers, ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorisation System) is specifically for travelers who do not need a visa to enter Greece.

  • ETIAS Rollout: It is scheduled to become mandatory in the last quarter of 2026.
  • Who needs it: Citizens of countries like the US, UK, Canada, and Australia who previously entered Europe with just their passports.
  • Who is exempt: EU citizens and those who already hold a valid Schengen visa or a residency permit do not need to apply for ETIAS.
  • Cost & Validity: The application is expected to cost approximately €20 (for adults) and is valid for three years or until your passport expires.
