• Good to Know: Elafonissi is a Natura 2000 protected area. It is strictly forbidden to remove any sand or plants. Also, keep in mind that the walk from the parking area to the lagoon and the picturesque pink sandbanks on the island can take 15–25 minutes on foot over sand. • Good to Know: The shores here are primarily pebbly, and due to specific currents, the water is usually a couple of degrees cooler than in Crete. After the beach, it is worth climbing up to the 13th–century Theotokos Monastery, which offers panoramic view of all the bays at once.
