Tour Description:
Day 1. Delphi: The Sacred Heart of Ancient Greece
Your journey begins with a drive through central Greece, passing the charming village of Arachova, before reaching Delphi. Situated on the slopes of Mount Parnassus, Delphi was once seen as the “center of the world” by the ancient Greeks. It was home to the Temple of Apollo and the famous Delphic Oracle, where the priestess Pythia delivered prophecies believed to come from Apollo himself.
The sanctuary also housed the Temple of Apollo, treasuries, an amphitheater, and a stadium where the Pythian Games were held—considered second in importance only to the Olympic Games.
Today, Delphi is a UNESCO World Heritage site. You can visit the ruins of the Temple of Apollo, see the ancient theater, and explore the stunning archeological museum filled with artifacts. Don’t forget to touch the “navel of the Earth” and drink from the healing Castalian spring, while enjoying the beautiful views of the olive tree-covered valley.
After exploring Delphi, we’ll head to Kalambaka town, for an overnight stay.
Day 2. Meteora: A Natural and Spiritual Wonder
The next morning, after breakfast, we’ll visit Meteora, a UNESCO mixed site, one of the most amazing places on Earth. Meteora, which means “suspended in the air,” is a group of monasteries built on top of towering cliffs that rise as high as 600 meters. The views from the top are simply breathtaking.
Meteora is not just a natural wonder—it is also an important religious center, second only to Mount Athos in significance. These cliffs were once home to Christian monks seeking peace and protection from invaders. To reach the monasteries, monks used ropes and ladders, making the location even more special. Today, there are six monasteries still standing, many filled with religious artifacts, icons, and ancient manuscripts. During your visit, you’ll have the chance to see two of these monasteries and learn about the monks’ life.
A Historic Stop at Thermopylae
On the way back to Athens, we’ll stop at the Thermopylae Gorge to see the monument of King Leonidas of Sparta. This is where the legendary Battle of Thermopylae took place, where King Leonidas and his 300 warriors made their heroic stand against the Persian army, forever etching their names in history.
Return to Athens late in the afternoon.
